Dolphin 2 Fishing report

Just finished a good trip for tuna fishing on the Dolphin 2. As catching goes it all depended on the school of fish we stoped on. Captian Greg would give us the play by play on what the fisn were doing on the sonar. Some fish would stay deep while others would just swim away. We were looking for the school that would stick with the boat and want to play. Our first stop was on a school that was only a pick for 2 hours a fish or two every 15 minutes all bluefin tuna. Then after that it was 1 or 2 tunas on each metered school. We had many lost fish due to pllled hooks and tangles. Dan even lost a troll fish due to somebody cutting his line with their line. By the end of the trip most everyone had a tuna and some with more then one. Dan and I got the triple on the tunas a bluefin, yellowfin and a albacore.

Tuna update

Good tuna fishing, even the overnight boats are getting a few tuna. Nice size on the yellowfin up to 45lbs. but you might need some light line to get a consistant bite. Bring some florocarbon line in 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40lb test to use as leader on your 25 to 40lb test main line.

Sea Star Report

Had a great day of fishing on the Sea Star on Fri. Working our way south from Helgren's Landing we concentrated on the kelp beds for the calicos. The water was clear and warm 67. The fishing started with some short bass but as the day went along we got into keeper sizes. The hot setup was light line, 8lb to 12lb test and the Bomber Jerk Minnow on a Bomber 1/16oz Heavy Hook cast into the kelp stringers. Fly lined anchovies and sardines also worked well on the bass. Thanks to Captain Joe and his crew for a great day.

A Few Changes to Charters

Just did some changes to a few of our charters. First we have a new date and price for the Indian 1 1/2 day trip. The new date and price is Sept. 21 to 24 at $280.00 and we lowered the price for the Eclipse trip from $325. to $280. for August 16 to 18 and we just had a few spots open for the Fisherman lll 3/4 day trip.

Albacore

If you are watching the counts for the albacore you might be a little disappointed but some of the counts don't account for the 1 1/2 day and longer trips who are doing great on albacore, yellowtail a few bluefin and the dorado are starting to show. On the longer trips the boats have more time to travel further and fish longer usually until dark so you have a better chance to catch fish. We have a couple of trips in August that have a great chance of catching fish. The first is a 1 1/2 day trip on the Indian $325 leaving on the 1st fishing on the 2nd and returning early morning on the 3rd. the second trip is on the Eclipse leaving the 16th. fishing on the 17th. and returning on the 18th. These two trips should be great trips so come and join us.

Charters for July

July will be the start of a great fishing season. We have 2 charters this month the first on the Aztecz 2 on 7/25 out of Ensanada, Baja. Should be yellowtail and bonito at the Island and if they are close enough tuna offshore. Then the Freelance on 7/28 out of Davey's Locker, Newport Beach. Sandbass, barracuda and maybe yellowtail will be the catch of that day.

Fishings Great

Looks like we turned the corner for our fishing. We have been having great fishing for barracuda, sandbass locally and how about white seabass fishing at Catalina boats returning with limits of seabass and down south in Mexican waters the tuna keep moving north, it won't be long before the overnight boats will be into great tuna fishing. We have 3 tuna charter trips lined up for the year and anglers are starting to sign up so don't wait too long to join us or you could be left behind. Twilight

Anyone interested in going on a twilight trip? Dan and I belong to a fishing club call Eastside Rod and Reel and on Sat. night June 19 they are hosting a twilight fishing trip on the Matt Walsh out of LA Harbor Sportfishing leaving at 6pm. Oceanside 95 Yellowtail

We had good yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Isls. on our first annual Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation, Richard Helgren Memoral, fund raiser trip. Most of the yellows were caught on fly lined sardines and a few were caught on the surface iron fishing at the Rockpile. We thank the 10 anglers who each donated $500.00 to the Foundation to be on this trip. With this money we can plan on introducing more kids to the experience of fishing the ocean and lakes. Congratulations to Marvin Ezaki who's 22lb. yellowtail made him the first name to go on the Richard Helgren Memorial Trophy. Also many thanks to Joe Helgren and Captain Tim and the crew of the O-95 for making this first annul trip a great one.

Ranger 85 fishing report

Just came back from our Ranger 85 Charter. We had some wind but the swells were small. We had great fishing at Santa Rosa Isl. reds, chuckleheads and lingcods. Had to do alot of drifts over small stones and ridges but we were able to get our limits of rockfish. We needed a pound or more of sinker to hold the bottom. The hot set up was a 1/2oz all white B-52 bucktail with a 4 inch white AA twin tail and a strip of squid on a two hook ganion. If you want to get in on this hot fishing with us we still have two more trips out of Oxnard, on the Mirage fishing on Thur. June 10 and on the Pacific Dawn fishing on Fri. June 25. This is a good time to fill your freezer with nice fish. Call me if you would like to join Dan for some fishing.

Channel Isl Fishing

Went fishing on the Apollo to San Migel and Santa Rosa Isl. on sunday. Got limits of rockfish, reds and chuckles and a legal ling. We fished in 300 ft. of water for the reds and 90 ft. for the lings. The hot color for the jigs was white, I used the white 1/2oz bucktail jig on my ganion with a strip of squid to get my fish and used a 4 1/2oz glow MM2 jig for the ling. White Seabass

A white seabass was caught at the Channel Isl. on the Mirage so this might be the time for the exotics to start to bite. We have two charters coming up at Oxnard area. The first is on the Pacific Dawn on May 23 then we have a makeup trip on the Ranger 85 on May 28. Spots are still available on both trips but should fill fast so don't wait to long. Windy conditions has made us postphone our Ranger 85 trip until May 28. By this time we should be into a summer like weather phase no more storms from the north. Now is the time to sign-up for some seabass and calico fishing.

Fishing Report on the Outrider

Just finished our first charter of the year on the Outrider. With a week of poor weather behind us we were still into a period of questionable fishing. With no live squid and no reports of fish at Catalina and San Clemente Islands we decided to try Santa Barbra Isl. By morning we woke up to some wind and choppy sea conditions. The day went moving from spot to spot Looking for Calicos and seabass but most of the fish were sheepheads, whitefish, red rockfish and a few short lingcods. The sun was out and as the day went on the wind and swells came down but the calicos and seabass wouldn't bite so everyone came home with a mixed bag of fish and had a great time on the Outrider with crew John, Jeff and Manny.

PS: The Freedom was going to San Nicolas Isl. but ended up at San Clemente Isl. They had good rockfish fishing but more important they saw big schools of yellowtails cruising around but not yet biting so it won't be long before do. So join us on our next trip on the Electra out of Helgrens Sportfishing, Oceanside departing April 22 and fishing the 23rd at San Clemente Isl.

Salmon Opener

After a 3 year closer on the ocean salmon season for California will open on April 3, 2010. The close of the season will be determined be the Pacific Fisheries Management Council and the DFG. This could be in months or a few weeks of the opener date. We will once again be able to fish for them. Fore us in Southern California waters any salmon caught will probably be an incidental catch. They must be 20" minimum length and a limit of 2 per day. Good Luck

Our new charter scheduel for 2010 is on the web site so now is the time to plan your fishing trips with us. Indian Trip new date

Because of the bad weather coming our way we are canceling the Dec. 11 trip on the Indian. The trip has been rescheduled for fishing on Sun. Dec 20 leaving on Sat night 9pm. If you can make this new date let me know or we can refund your money. If any of you that couldn't make the original date but would like to go on the new date go to the web site and sign up.

Wed. weather report for Indian trip

Looking at the weather reports doesn't look good. The tail end of the next storm is dipping well south into Baja waters and the long range boats report a lumpy ride as they head home to San Diego. We will make our final decision on the trip later this afternoon, just waiting to hear from Chris about a new date for the trip maybe next Thur. fish on Fri. I will be calling you about the final decision.

Weather watch for Indian Trip

Watching the weather for the upcoming trip. The first storm didn't affect the Mexican waters. Will see what the second storm acts. Will keep you updated on Wed. In the meantime the fishing tackle suggestion is. We will fish in waters to 400ft. deep. You need sinkers to 1lb. You can use up to a 4 hook ganion. If you us mono line use 40lb. test minimum. Braided or dacron works the best.

Fish Report for Ranger 85 Trip

25 anglers and the crew ventured off to the Channel Isl. from Oxnard Sportfishing on Sat. night for our second to last charters of the year. In the morning we found ourselves fishing at Santa Rosa Isl. and not at San Miguel the preferred isl. because of the strong breeze. We moved from spot to spot catching a verity of rockfish but not the quality you usually get. The last half of the trip we moved to Santa Cruz Isl. And started catching the nicer size rockfish, reds, whitefish and lingcods. A big thanks to Captain Frank and his crew for a great trip. The Ranger 85 will be running regular island trips to the end of the year so join the Ranger 85 for a great fishing experience. Emeryville Fishing Report

Just returned from fishing on the New Huck Finn and the New Salmon Queen out of Emeryville Sportfishing. The first day we fished the Farallon Isl. for limits on rockfish up to 5lb. and some lingcods and salmon groupers. The weather was warn and the ocean was flat and Captain Jay and Dave took good care of everyone. Then on sunday we fished the New Salmon Queen. Fishing a little further north then the day before we caught nice lingcods from 12lb. to 20lb and limits of rockfish to 8lbs. We were also treated to a great show from some humpback whales. Thanks to Captian Shim and Tony.

Electra 9.20 Report

Sunday just finished the 3/4 day trip on the Electra. beautiful day with no breeze and flat calm waters. We headed south to the kelps off Del Mar where we stopped to fish some bonitos but they wouldn't bite so into the kelp we fished for the calicos. It was a steedy slow pick on the fish with sandbass, calicos some rockfish and sheephead. All in all a slow day but everyone caught something and had fun. Jackpot her first to Marina bested everyone with a nice sheephead.

Dolphin 2 fish report

Just finished the Dolphin 2 trip out of Mission Bay Sportfishing, San Diego. We started the morning abour 75 miles south of San Diego trolling and looking for kelp paddies. Most of the paddies held dorados, yellowtails and some tunas but basicly it was wide open fishing with a lot of fish lost of tangles, chewed off hooks and broken lines but in the end everyone had limits of dorado to 25lbs. Yellowfin tunas to 20lbs. yellowtails and a lone 40lb. albacore. Thanks to Captain Greg and his crew for a great trip.

This week we have a tuna trip on the Dolphin 2 on Sept. 17 with a few spots open and a ¾ day trip on the Electra out of Oceanside on Sept. 20 with lots of open spots so now is a good time to join us for some fishing and some fun.

Electra Fishing Report

On the Electra we headed south looking for kelp paddies. Started the morning trolling for tuna and the first jig strike produced a small skipjack, well that was a start. The first paddie saw some wild fishing for 4 dorado and a yellowfin but many more were lost to tangles and chewed through line. Throughout the morning we checked out paddies to end with 1 yellowfin, 1 skipjack and 13 dorado. Even though the count seems low we lost as many fish. Also saw 2 sword fish during the day, no dought they were after the dorado as we were. All in all a great day with beautiful weather and calm seas a great crew and great anglers. Local Tuna on the Freelance

I had to try for the local tuna so on fri. I jumped on the Freelance at Davey's Locker. After getting bait we headed for the area around the 43 Bank. No trolling fish but the first kelp paddey we hit produced 5 dorado. After that it was a yellowtail one one paddy the some dorado on another and so that's the way the day went.

3/4 day boats out on Mission Bay and Seaforth are getting yellowfin tuna and they maybe moving up the line to LA waters.

I think I communicated with everyone about the change of dates on the Electra charter from Aug.28 to Sept. 12 and the boat we will be on now is the Oceanside 95. If I missed you take note.

Looks like the San Diego boats have found new fish and all species of tuna are biting, a week too late for us. Also the LA boats going to Cortez Bank are getting tuna so I will be going on the Westerly out of Pierpoint Landing leaving on Sept. 4 for a 1&1/2 day trip. Had a great trip on the Azteca Too in Enasnada fishing Todo Santos Isl. for big bonito and yellowtail.

Fisherman lll Report

Wed. we had our charter on the Fisherman lll at H&M Landing, San Diego. The fishing was good all day but the seals made it tough eating our baits and some hooked fish but we still managed to get 90 big bonitos, 6 yellowtails and some calico bass.

Catching Up On Fish Reports

First we had a weekend in Ensanada, Baja Mexico fishing on the Azteca Too. The fishing was great catching yellowtail, big bonitos, barracuda, calico bass and rockfish. Most of the fish was caught at Isl. Todo Santos, Trolling the hard baits and throwing the Magic Metals. Everyone had a great time. The Azteca Too is a beautiful modern boat.

Fishing Report Fron the Freelance

We were going to fish the local sandbass and barracuda but the waters along the coast turned cold and the fishing shut off so it was decided to go to Catalina Isl. and fish the calicos. Fishing west of Avalon we started catching calicos and the infamous Hat Man, Ernie Branch showed his skills and landed the only yellowtail of the day. Fishing different spots around the east end we continued catching and some releasing nice calicos. Towaeds the end of the day we did see the yellowtails around the boat but they didn't want to bite.

As many of you know I was fortunate enough this past weekend to catch a very nice Golden Trout. I have attached some photos. Ed Zieralski of the San Diego Union Tribune also wrote about it in today’s paper. Besides this great story by Ed, the local papers have contacted me as well. I also spoke with the department of Fish and Game yesterday. While typing this I got a phone call from Western Outdoor News. This is quite exciting.

There are five primary species of trout that I am able to find around my neck of the woods. I have already caught a nice Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brook. The one missing was the Golden. The odds of catching one that would match the others on my wall were very slim. They are usually 8 to 10 inches and if you catch one bigger than 12 it is a good day. I had heard of a lake that might have a few bigger ones and I set off on the mission. I fished the lake a few times without success. On Saturday I was able to catch the fish of my life. It is currently being mounted by Davidson Taxidermy here in town. In a few months it will complete the living room wall.

It was a bitter sweet day on Saturday. I was very happy to catch such an amazing fish, however the aspects of the chase being over and taking the fish from the lake were not easy to deal with. I was sitting there with the fish on my lap taking in everything about what was around me, remembering all the attempts up that mountain and realizing this was a great personal moment for me. It is just very interesting how confused I feel with the entire situation. As the smoke clears and the fish ends up on the wall, what will really matter to me is being able to sit down in my living room and relive the moment over and over, and to have this fish remind me of what I am passionate about and why I live where I live. It symbolizes the beauty of the sierras and will offer so much for me personally for the rest of my life. Now it is time to find another goal to pursue. I have some other things in mind. As I am sure you can tell, this was not just a story about a big fish, there was so much more to the story. The fish will just remind me.

Tuna Stimulus Plan

Rumors are that the cost of going on a tuna fishing trip is getting up there. So after negotiating with Captain Chris of the Indian we are offering to include Mexican permits and 2 meals included in the cost of the trip on July 29. Pacific Dawn Fishing Report

Finished our trip on the Pacific Dawn with limits of red rockfish some lingcods and a lone white seabass. We started our fishing at Santa Rosa Isl. fishing for halibut and white seabass. The lone jackpot winning 15lb. seabass was caught by one of our regular charter angler Richard W. After a few hours of drift fishing we made the move to San Miguel Isl. to fish for nice reds, chuckles and lingcods. Everyone ended with limits. One comment about Captain Pat Cavanaugh, He grew up fishing this area and knows all the hot spots and from his experience of running long range boats he has made the Pacific Dawn a great boat to fish and the cook Whitney made some fantastic meals and snacks. June 3 Gail Force Fish Report

After boarding the Gail Force we headed for Catalina Isl. on calm waters and with hopes of great fishing. The first area we fished was around Arrow Point for some calico bass and bonitos. Later in the morning we moved to the weat end of the isl. to West Cove for more bass then soon we started to see the yellowtail boiling on bait but even after changing our position in the cove the yellows just didn't want our baits. So we moved back to the front of the isl. and fished Indian Rock to Eagle Reef for more calicos and bonitos. With some good burgers and friends we had a great time. High Sierra Report

Just returned fishing the High Sierra this holiday weekend. At Bridgeport Reservor the trout fishing was great. We had limits of trout by 9am fishing at Rainbow Point. We were anchored in 18ft. of water and the hot bait was the mouse, a pink Power Worm with a nugget of Rainbow Candy Gulp. Most of the fish were planters but a few were holdovers to 2.5 lb. Next we fished Crowley. Most reports say fishing is tough but by moving to different spots around the lake and trying different baits fishing can be good. We started the morning by trolling leadcore at 2 colors and got trout on my favorite Excaliber. Later in the morning we tried different spots in Magee Bay and finaly found a spot where the trout wanted to bite. The hot bait here was the inflated nightcrawler. My nephew Ryan was the hot fisherman with a couple of 4lb trout.

Westerly Fishing Report

Just finished our first charter of 09 on the Westerly. We went to Catalina Isl. on an overnight trip looking for white seabass. After making some live squid at Ben Weston we set up at Sentinel Rock. Conditions looked good but well into the morning we had some calicos a halibut and a few misc. perch so after the prime tide was over we headed west to see what we could catch. The rest of the day we caught calicos, sheepheads and whitefish. It was great to be at Catalina Isl. on a nice day with great anglers and Captain John and his crew. We have another trip on the Westerly in August for some local fishing so check our charter schedule and join us or on any of our other trips.
